2013 book shipment arrives in Uganda |
|

May 27, 2013 - High school boys from Mengo Secondary School help unload 440
boxes of books, representing a year's work by Libraries of Love volunteers. The boys formed two
lines. The boxes were heavy, but they found it funny to toss them at each other
as they moved them down the line. So much work. So many kids will become
readers. So much thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible again this year.

Uganda.

Thanks to LiveMom contributor for great article |
|
Our sincere thanks to LiveMom contributor Nicole Basham for her
article about Libraries of Love and her recommending us to readers as a
place to donate books.
"I loved the idea of passing our books along to children half a world
away, and in doing so, showing my son the value of sharing our stories. ..." she wrote.

Thanks to Girl Scouts for book drive |
|
Two Girl Scout troops combined to collect 750 books for
Libraries of Love. Pictured are girls of Daisy Troop 2038, who along with
Junior Troop 2093 should be very proud of their work. The girls thank Ms.
Varljen for letting them host the book drive at Patsy Sommer Elementary. Thanks
also goes to Ms. Wimmer and Ms. Solis for letting them use the library to
collect the books, and extra big thanks for all their help in promoting the
book drive through the morning broadcasts, emails, etc. Well done! Libraries of Love appreciates your contribution.

'Walk to Read' simply inspiring |

Remarkable indeed – students helping students!
The Libraries of Love Board stands amazed at the results of an event,
‘Walk to Read’ which was conceived by Jan Richards, principal at Laurel
Mountain Elementary, where Executive Director Trudy Marshall served as librarian for 10 years. LME
helped facilitate the first Ugandan library in 2005 and has continued
their support through kind words, books, and funding each year.
The recent ‘Walk to Read’ event integrated learning, physical fitness,
and philanthropy. Students in area schools learned about children who
have no books, and decided, yes, they could join others and do something
to change that situation. Round Rock ISD elementary schools
participating were
* Blackland Prairie
* Canyon Creek
* Elsa England
* Jollyville
* Laurel Mountain
* Old Town
* Spicewood
Posters of Ugandan students with books were displayed at each school.
Lessons plans and materials were provided by Libraries of Love so that
each day the students learned new facts about the daily life in school
and at home of students in Uganda. Also, Trudy had the pleasure of showing a
video and sharing information about Libraries of Love at an assembly at
each school. |

Great to be back in Uganda |
March 2, 2013 - Report from Trudy:
|
"Great to be in Uganda. Ready to tackle 24 libraries - arrange librarian
meetings - do training - prepare for the LOL shipment to arrive - make plans for
four new libraries! Cheers for Libraries of Love - 9 years now and still
changing lives!"
Trudy reports from Uganda:
The 17 Libraries of Love librarians in Kampala were thrilled to be together again recently. Listening to them give examples of students who love to read made my day. We spent the afternoon discussing ways to encourage reading and what needed to be taught to students. I can’t
say enough about these precious young ladies and men who love their
jobs, and love being part of the Libraries of Love-Uganda family. We are
fortunate and honored to have them serve as our librarians.

LOL Director Trudy Marshall successfully ended her private one-month mission
trip to Masai Land in Kenya to oversee construction of three buildings funded by
Pflugerville Community Church.

Thanks to publishers for 2013 project support |
The Libraries of Love team appreciates the continued support of book publishers across the country, some who handpick the
amazing books they donate for the Ugandan libraries. This year, once again, the
donations contained an array of easy, fiction, and nonfiction for our primary and
secondary libraries. Special thanks to Capstone. Executive Director Trudy Marshall applied for a grant from Capstone, and Libraries of Love was awarded 24,000 new books. We appreciate such a generous grant. The books will
be appreciated even more by our Ugandan students. Thank you, Capstone! |
